LeBron James' stylist shares dresscode advice for athletes

Daily Dose: Dress to impress on a college visit

Miami Heat forward LeBron James and New York Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire are widely considered two of the best-dressed athletes in the NBA. From bow ties to nerd glasses to bespoke suits, these dudes wear bold and eye-catching attire.

The maven responsible for styling their clothes (but not their swagger) is Rachel Johnson. She's not afraid to craft playful clothing combos — like Stoudemire’s white varsity sweater, striped tie, and plaid shirt paired with khakis and dark blue Chucks (view the look).

While Johnson’s styling is spirited, she also puts together plenty of clean and classic looks for her baller clients. We asked her to offer a few tips on how to dress to impress during a one-on-one meeting with a college coach.

What’s the value of looking polished in front of a college coach?
First impressions are everything. When you’re meeting for the first time in a professional setting, utilize the opportunity to be professional. People don’t want to see how cool you are. They want to see how you look pulled together and representing yourself.

Tell us your game plan for a classic and professional look?
A trouser needs to be involved — dark or light grey or navy — and a collared shirt like a button-up is a must. You can wear both items with a tie and a vest. And a lace-up brown shoe is perfect. If the meeting is more formal, wear a full suit with a button-up shirt and no tie and a pair of loafers.

What brands are good for athletes who need atypical sizes?
Gap, Banana Republic and J.Crew have big and tall options and items that guys can get a lot of wear out of. Those brands carry also a professional aesthetic at a reasonable price.

Also, JoS. A. Bank has great variety and prices. Look for the “buy one, get two free” weekend specials to stock up on classic suits. Men's Wearhouse also has great variety and prices. Look out for the “athletic” section.
