Zumba builds cardio and improves footwork

The weight room is like a second home for athletes. While that training time is necessary, let’s face it – it can also get a little stale.

Let us help you mix up your routine with unique and fun (but not easy) workouts that build strength, speed, power and improve balance and flexibility.

Video eight of our Training Remix series explores Zumba, instructed by LaShawn Jones of Z Club NY in New York City.

What it is and how it helps: Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance workout that combines fast-paced steps and movements performed to the beat of high-energy international music.

More than just dancing, the workout requires you to move at a fast rate for an extended period of time, integrating anaerobic and aerobic components.

Each choreographed routine involves constant changes of direction, which helps improve coordination.

“A lot of times athletes don’t think of going to a dance class to help improve their performance,” Jones says.

Zumba’s other key benefits, such as body awareness, rhythm and footwork, are advantageous for just about any athlete.

The test: Archbishop Molloy (Queens, N.Y.) third baseman Fallon McCarthy aspires to play college softball. And McCarthy’s more than committed to pursuing her passion — she’s “addicted.”

Last spring, McCarthy helped her team claim the CHSAA city crown and advance to the state semi-finals.

In the field, McCarthy must stay light on her feet to be successful at the hot corner.

McCarthy’s ability to move is the direct result of dedicated training. Her approach: do anything and everything possible to stay sharp, quick and agile — and that includes non-traditional workouts.

Zumba put McCarthy’s skills to the test. Watch the video to see her in action.

Featured rhythms: Merengue, Reggaeton, Salsa and Bhangra
