Five sophomores who stood out at the Nike Peach Jam boys basketball tournament in North Augusta, S.C., which includes the top high school-aged recruits in the country:
1. Thon Maker, Boo Williams AAU (Hampton, Va.)
The 7-footer is only 200 pounds, but more than held his own against two of the top senior big men in the country on Thursday.
Maker, who is from Australia but plays for the Carlisle School in Martinsville, Va., led Boo Williams to a 60-57 defeat of Chicago's Mac Irvin Fire, which included Whitney Young (Chicago) center Jahlil Okafor and Curie (Chicago) power forward Cliff Alexander. Maker had 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.
“The only thing he has to do is get stronger,” said Boo Williams. “He can do everything else. He did a good job playing against guys that outweighed him by 40 or 50 pounds.”
2. Caleb Swanigan, Spiece Indy Heat (Fort Wayne, Ind.)
Swanigan takes up a lot of space at 6-8 and 275 pounds. Though the Homestead (Fort Wayne, Ind.) center needs to drop a few pounds, he makes good use of his bulk and plays aggressively. He had 15 rebounds in a 68-50 loss to the St. Louis Eagles.
“I've been playing with Indy Spiece for a long time and I'm used to playing with older players,” Swanigan said. “I am working on getting more explosive.”
3. De'Aaron Fox, Houston Hoops
The 6-2, 160-pound guard averaged 21 points a game as a freshman this past season at Cypress Lakes (Katy, Texas), including a 52-point game. He didn't seem to be overwhelmed against better competition on Thursday, scoring 12 points with four assists and six rebounds in a 80-67 defeat of the Jackson (Miss.) Tigers.
4. Braxton Beverly, Travelers (Kentucky)
The Perry County Central (Hazard, Ky.) guard showed a nice touch from outside and demonstrated he could run the point in limited time (14 minutes).
He had nine points and two assists in a 95-63 loss to the CP3 All Stars from North Carolina.
5. Edrice Adebayo, Boo Williams AAU
Adebayo, who plays for Northside (Pinetown, N.C.), is nicknamed "Bam Bam" and is a force underneath at 6-7 and 220 pounds. He needs to improve on his shot selection but is a solid all-round player.
