Charges filed against high school football player who swung helmet at opponent

The Reading Eagle reports that Hamburg (Pa.) football player Joey Cominsky, who struck an opposing player in the head with his helmet during an on-field fight in September, has been charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.

"We have been in communication with the district attorney of Lebanon County since the incident, and we were aware of the fact that the charges were going to be filed in juvenile court," Cominsky's lawyer, Allan L. Sodomsky, told the Eagle. "We are and have been working with the district attorney to resolve this matter, and this is the beginning of that process."

The incident occurred during a game against Annville-Cleona on Sept. 6. Cominsky appears to rip Annville-Cleona player Josh Hartman's helmet off his head before striking him with his own helmet. Annville-Cleona player Taylor Prentice then threw several punches and was ejected from the game along with Cominsky.

The South Annville Township police department announced the charges Wednesday, but would not elaborate about whether more than one player was charged.

"Due to the case involving juveniles, no other information will be released," chieef Benjamin W. Sutcliff said in a statement.
