Detroit Public Schools officials identified a teenager who was fatally shot Friday evening outside Martin Luther King Jr. High School as 16-year-old Michael Scott.
District spokesman Steven Wasko said in an e-mail that Scott was enrolled at the high school and had sufficient credits to be classified as a ninth-grader. The shooting occurred during an attempted robbery of a member of the girls’ basketball coaching team, Wasko said.
Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens said over the weekend that a 70-year-old man was approached by two teens near Larned and Mt. Elliott in an apparent hold-up. The man then pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking Scott and a 15-year-old who was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The other teenager was not enrolled in Detroit Public Schools, Wasko said.
The Detroit Police Department’s homicide unit is investigating.
