Between games in Philadelphia on Wednesday and Saturday, 76ers forward Evan Turner made a quick trip to Ohio on Friday for New Albany High School's Senior Night.
Turner surprised Devon Pitts, one of four New Albany seniors, who cried upon seeing his friend and then went out and scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 54-33 win.
Pitts and Turner were introduced by an assistant coach on Turner's high school team in 2005. Turner, who would go on to star at Ohio State, became a mentor to Pitts, who was raised by a single mother.
“We would text and talk and I came to Ohio and we’d hang out and I saw a little bit of myself in him,” Turner told the Columbus Dispatch. “He’s kind of quiet and trying to find his way. The difference is, with the shyness and insecurities, I had a brother, Darius, who made me feel comfortable. Devon didn’t have any siblings."
Turner joined Pitts' mom and uncle in walking him out onto the court on Senior Night.
“This is one of the greatest nights of my life,” Pitts said.
Thanks to Max Preps for the heads up.
