THE WINNER: Nick Ryan
School: Fayetteville-Manlius (Manlius, N.Y.)
Athletic achievement: He raced to the Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:07.9, leading the Hornets to second place as a team. The state’s returning Gatorade Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, Ryan won the Nike Cross Nationals New York Regional championship in 15:27 and was 15th nationally at the NXN Final. He also won the Section III championship and finished second in the Eastern States race at the Manhattan Invitational.
Academic excellence: Ryan has maintained a B-plus average in the classroom.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of a homeless shelter and a youth arts program.
“Nick has had a stellar career,” said Fayetteville-Manlius head coach Bill Aris. “He got stronger and better as he physically matured, and he improved progressively each year.”
THE FUTURE: Ryan has verbally committed to an athletic scholarship at Syracuse University beginning this fall.
