From Michael Jordan’s obsession with rocking North Carolina shorts under his Chicago Bulls shorts during games to Serena Williams’ need to bounce the tennis ball five times before her first serve, athletes have long been believers that superstitions give them the added edge they need to get in the zone before games.
Every week we’ll take a look at some of the wackiest superstitions athletes and coaches from around the country implement. This week we caught up with Montverde (Montverde, Fla.) boys’ basketball coach Kevin Boyle.
The Superstition: Sock pull-ups
The Breakdown: “I know it’s a little weird, but before every game, while the teams are warming up, I make sure that my socks are pulled all the way up. I don’t know why, sometimes I don’t even know that I do it, it’s just a thing. I don’t know, it’s just something I do.”
The Why: “I guess it’s a routine thing for me. Like I said, I’m not even aware that I do it sometimes, but I guess it’s programmed in my mind. I do a lot of little things before and during games. I’m usually not very still.”
