Athlete of the Week: Jarrett Henry

Jarrett Henry is a sophomore at West Laurens High School. He’s a laidback, quiet kind of kid, but when it comes to wrestling and academics, he’s making quite a statement.

By his coach’s account, Jarrett Henry is a young man of few words.

“He’s not going to say much anywhere,” says head coach Ed Bland.

That’s the thing about wrestling: Your score tends to speak for itself.

The difference between Jarrett on and off the mat is his mentality. Mild-mannered in conversation, the sophomore unleashes himself in competition.

“You can go out there and be rough and it relieves all your anger,” says Henry.

That switch has carried Henry through his long wrestling career. He laced up for the first time when he was five, under the guidance of West Laurens legend, Gerald Carr.

“He’s been wrestling a long time, so his age doesn’t really mean much,” Bland says.

The experience on the mat is showing up in Henry’s wrestling record. He’s tough to bring down.

Bland says, “Lost two matches last year and two matches this year. Good kid, good wrestler, good in the classroom.”

“It’s kind of helped me with school, too, because I’m always busy doing a sport,” says Henry.

If it’s fall, Henry’s playing football. If it’s winter, he’s on the mat, and in the spring, he plays baseball. No matter the season or the sport, he’s always hitting the books.

Henry says, “I know I’ve gotta get good grades to get a scholarship. I think sports is what made me keep my grades up.”

His grades have always been high. Henry is on the honor roll, but had a slight hiccup earlier this year.

“I made honor roll since I was Pre-K. I got my first ‘B’ this year, but I’m going to try to carry out getting 90s through the rest of high school,” says Henry.

Henry is going for As in school, and a couple other things in wrestling.

“That’s what I like about it. You can get two state rings a year,” Henry says.

It’s almost February, just about time for Henry and the Raiders to make a push toward some jewelry.

Henry and the Raiders lost to fourth place Lumpkin county in the Macon duals last week.

Wrestlers will compete in sectionals in February, for a chance to go to the state championship.
