Marvin Bagley lands UConn offer

Marvin Bagley is only 15, but he’s already no stranger to major media attention. Heck, he’s been prominently featured right here at USA Today. In July of 2013, Arizona Republic journalist Richard Obert chronicled Bagley’s meteoric rise, which saw him land scholarship offers from both Northern Arizona and Arizona State before he had entered the eighth grade. Now that he’s completed eighth grade, he’s getting attention from the very highest peaks of all: The defending national champs.

Two sources close to USA Today confirmed that UConn head basketball coach Kevin Ollie personally called Bagley’s father and extended a scholarship offer to the eighth grader, who has (obviously) yet to play a single high school game. In fact, he hasn’t played a single school game of any type because he refrained from middle school competition simply because he is so much more advanced than other middle school players.

At the moment, Bagley is widely considered the top prospect in the Class of 2018 (2018!?! Why are we scoring recruits for 2018 already!), but it’s early enough for any number of other prospects to catch up to him. Heck, the top prospect in the Class of 2018 may not even be playing basketball yet; after all, he’ll still have four years to play before heading to college.

Now Bagley is heading to Corona Del Sol, where he’s already competing in – and dominating – summer league games. The early returns have been pretty remarkable, which is exactly what you’d expect from a 6-foot-10 freshman wunderkind.

Maybe at the end of the day Kevin Ollie will just have been stealing a march on the other top programs.
