The turmoil in Ferguson, Missouri has insured that the start of the school year at area schools is delayed. With the National Guard now in town to try and rule over continued tensions, there’s no knowing when anything resembling Ferguson’s “normal” return. Those conditions make it awfully hard to prepare for a prep football season.

Yet, in the midst of all those questions, the closest NFL football team stepped forward to provide a brief escape. As first reported by MMQB’s Robert Klemko, the St. Louis Rams offered up 75 free tickets to football players and coaches from each of McCluer, McCluer North and McCluer South-Berkeley High Schools to the Rams’ preseason game against the Packers at the Edward Jones Dome on Saturday night.

“In light of everything going on it just kind of hit me,” Rams manager of fan development and alumni relations Kyle Eversgerd told MMQB. “I can’t imagine with all that stuff going on, how tough it must be to practice. We were able to get them away from it all.”

The effort was made in good faith and responsibility was immediately passed on to the coaches themselves, who were responsible for the 75 tickets the team provided. And while the effort may have brought a brief evening of respite for the students at the McCluer schools, they now are forced to come to grips with continued uncertainty and suspended athletic contests until school does eventually get underway.

Still, for that night, it’s clear that the players enjoyed the momentary distraction.

“It was overwhelming to see the NFL live, for real,” McCluer senior running back Henry Jones told MMQB. “You saw how fast they played, and how they played together. I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I could actually see myself out there playing.”

For now, McCluer, McCluer North and McCluer South-Berkeley are all scheduled to be in action on Friday and Saturday, but there’s no telling if that will still be the case come game time. Both McCluer and McCluer South-Berkeley’s games are scheduled to be played in Ferguson, so one would assume a venue switch would be arranged if those games are allowed to move forward.
