Capital Homeschool’s Kettel shows great improvement

Junior repeats as a Bath Invitational cross country meet winner

A year ago, she won the first race of her high school career at the Bath Bret Clements Invitational in 19 minutes, 37 seconds.

On Saturday, Sara Kettel of Capital Homeschool ran nearly two minutes faster on a wet, muddy course while winning the Class 2 race in 17:50. In her previous two races this season, she ran 17:26 and 17:28.

“My current time for my first mile usually stands between 5:30 and 5:40,” Kettel said. “That’s what I was doing last year except I slowed down drastically after that.”

The junior has learned how to push herself.

“Before that I had no experience with racing,” Kettel said. “Racing is more than people think it is. There’s a lot of strategic things to do. Not to get out fast – that’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned – and not to give up mentally.”

The DeWitt girls, led by senior Shelby Waterson (19:25), kept Capital Homeschool from taking the team title in the Class 2 race, 68-97.

DeWitt senior Mitch Kolito (16:42) finished runner-up to St. Louis sophomore Evan Goodell (16:36) in the Class 2 boys race that likely would have been won by Divison 3 state champion Keenan Rebera of Lansing Catholic . But Cougars coach Tim Simpson held Rebera out of the race in part to better prepare him for Friday’s MSU Spartan Invitational.

The fastest area boys time was run by St. Johns senior Codey Cook (16:18), who caught Holt senior Alberto Gomez (16:20) and edged him for fifth place in the Class 1 race.

“I took off a little slower, sped up throughout the ru as much as I could, “ Cook said. “I told myself I wanted to get him, because we’ve raced before and he’s beat me.”

St. Johns senior Karrigan Smith (19:08) slipped from third place early in the girls Class 1 race to seventh. Fellow LSJ co-runner of the year Meg Darmofal of Mason did not compete in the race because of soreness in her shins.

“At the end, I ran into some stomach problems and some stitches,” Smith said. “But the difference between a good runner and a bad runner is trying to move past those things. Hopefully, I did today.”

Leslie junior Haley Dack (20:36) and the Pewamo-Westphalia girls triumphed in Class 3.

Stockbridge edged P-W 49-54 to take the Class 3 boys team title. Hillsdale’s Brock Evers (16:19) kept Panthers’ senior Austin Fillmore (16:22) from taking the individual title.
