Few players, regardless of class, have seen their star rise as quickly as Dennis Smith Jr. After winning a state title last season, Smith turned in a dominant summer on the AAU circuit, full of mind-boggling highlights and wins. Now, as the top point guard in the ESPN 60, Smith’s got a “who’s who” of college basketball’s elite all intently pursuing him. Smith has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.
What’s going on world!
Well, this is my third entry in my blog and I just want to let you guys know what’s been going on with me.
Most of you know by now that I didn’t make the USA U17 team. I was definitely disappointed with not making the team, but there were a lot of great players at the event. I went out there and competed as hard as the next man and, unfortunately, I didn’t make it, but I’ll definitely be back out there next year going even harder.
Of course I look back on it and think about different things that I could’ve done better, but I think the biggest thing was just being there in that environment for the first time. It was an adjustment.
I definitely never make excuses though; I’m rooting for all my guys on the team and I know they’re gonna bring the gold home.
I definitely took it as a learning experience too.
It makes me see that I’m not invincible. I moved up a lot in the rankings this summer, but, at the end of the day, I didn’t make the team so I feel like I’ve got a lot more to prove to people.
It just made me hungrier!
I thought it was cool that Duke, UNC, N.C. State and Florida all reached out to me after I didn’t make the USA team. They all basically told me to use it as motivation and that’s what I plan to do.
I’m at adidas Nations now and y’all make sure to tune in tonight at 9 p.m. on ESPNU because my team is playing the for championship. I’ll be back Tuesday then I head over to CP3 Camp this weekend and I’m just looking forward to learning from Chris Paul and picking up some pointers from him. He’s one of the best point guards in the world so I know I’ll learn a lot.
Of course y’all wanna know about my recruitment, right? Well, everything is still going good with that.
I do want to say this though; I’m not playing football this season so all the football coaches can just know that now. It’s funny that I get recruitment letter for football. The latest I heard on the football side was that Wake Forest was gonna try and offer me, but I’m not playing football.
Right now everything is open for me and I’m definitely not favoring anyone.
A lot of people thought I was saying that I was leaning toward Kentucky because I said that I want an offer from them, but who wouldn’t? I mean they’re known for producing great guards, like other schools who have offered me, and I think everyone wants an offer from them and all of the other schools on my list.
I’m definitely not leaning toward them or anyone else and if they offered I still wouldn’t be leaning toward them; I just figure I’ve got all the other offers I really want and I want one from them too, that’s all.
I don’t plan on taking any visits until basketball season starts back up; I’m not sure where I’ll be going right now, but I’ll let all of you guys know when I do.
It’s still crazy to have all of these coaches telling me that they want me to come in and be “the guy” for them. Not too long ago I was just hoping for schools to start recruiting me. It’s a great feeling, but, honestly, I feel like I deserve it because I put in so much work to get here, and I’m never the kind of guy that feels like he’s made it. I still have a long way to go.
OK, ya’ll know that I told y’all in the first blog that I did a little rapping on the side, Haha!
Remember I told y’all my stage name was “Baby June!”
Well, right now I’ve been so busy with basketball that my rap career has been a little down, but I’ll put some Instagram vids out in September so stay tuned for that, Haha!
OK people, y’all know I really appreciate you reading my blog. Check back soon for blog entry No. 4 and I’ll holla at y’all later.
