CONCORD, N.C. — It certainly didn’t come easy for the Spiders against rival AL Brown in the opener Friday, but the Concord defense stood strong in the final seconds for a 20-14 win. It’s the Spiders third straight win over their rivals in the battle for the bell.
The crucial sequence came in the final 17 seconds. The Wonders had the ball at the Concord one yard line. Kannapolis ran up the gut, but was stopped short. The Wonders had no timeouts left and time ran out giving the Spiders an emotional win.
It was a slow start for both teams but Concord put up three scores in the first half to take a 20-7 lead. Rocky Reid provided the biggest highlight of the first two quarters with a 56 yard touchdown run.
AL Brown seemed to be wearing down the Spider defense in the second half and a Daveon Berry score pulled the Wonders within 20-14. That was as close as they would get.
