Mo’ne Davis is on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated, and the magazine has received plenty of kudos for its choice. Being on the cover of the world’s most famous sports magazine might leave some nervous, but not Davis. Instead, she’s already setting her sights on her next SI cover, with the explicit goal of earning a cover spot for multiple sports.
On Tuesday Davis told Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia being on the SI cover was a dream come true, but that it came true before she arrived where she assumed she’d earn a cover turn. Davis is an obsessive basketball fan and has made it her lifelong athletic goal to play for coach Geno Auriemma at UConn.
For the record, Auriemma has taken notice of Davis’ talent on the diamond. According to the teen, the UConn coach called her on Tuesday to let her know that he was watching and appreciated her UConn fandom. He also told her to get a few more hits.
As it turns out, only Auriemma is able to take Davis’ breath away. She didn’t know what to say to the coach she hopes to suit up for some day.
She did know what to say to all those who wanted to know about her reaction to landing as SI’s cover story, however.
“Actually, it was [a dream],” she told CSN Philadelphia. “A couple years ago, I was reading it with my brother. I wanted to be up there, but I didn’t know what sport. And now it’s baseball, so hopefully next it’ll be me in a UConn jersey.”
