Athletic achievement: She raced to her third straight Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 18:14.9. The state’s two-time returning Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, Poe was the fastest Nebraska competitor at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional championships, crossing the line in 18:37.4 to take 28th place.

Academic excellence: Poe has maintained a 3.96 GPA.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally as a library aide, a peer tutor and as part of an elementary education literacy-outreach program.

“Jeralyn Poe is a fantastic runner,” said Bryce Lambley, head coach at Fremont (Neb.). “She has the ability to forge the pace or to share it with whoever else is in the lead, and then just pull away at pretty much any time she chooses. She is not cocky or arrogant and is a good sportsperson. I truly believe this was a much better-than-average year in Nebraska cross country for girls and Poe is the cream of the crop.”

THE FUTURE: Poe will be a senior this fall.
