So far, the Little League World Series has been dominated by two larger stories: Mo’Ne Davis’ Taney Little League Squad from South Philadelphia and the Jackie Robinson West All-Stars from the South Side of Chicago. Yet that nationalistic focus overlooks a truly remarkable story from the international bracket; the team from Mexico is producing some absolute must-watch performances.
Take the Mexicans’ victory against Australia for example. Not only did the team use two massive homers to pilot a 6-2 victory and eliminate the Aussies, they also brought the best home run celebration of the tourney — this bowling ball celebration wins, by far — and had one of those bombs delivered by the shortest player at the tournament.
The 4-foot-8 star who delivered the home run you see above is Ruy Martinez. Not only does he have power with the bat, he also has a sense of humor, as he proved by posing for the photo you see below.
All of these factors make Mexico one of the more compelling and entertaining squads at the tournament. If they miraculously worked their way to the Championship Game and got a chance to face off against either Taney or Jackie Robinson West, the Little League World Series might end up with the kind of television ratings usually reserved for the Major League World Series.
