The Troy Brown Jr. Blog

Troy Brown Jr. is the top point guard in the ESPN 25 and No. 2 overall player in the class of 2017. After dominating the AAU circuit this summer, The Centennial (Las Vegas) star has everyone from Arizona to Duke to Arizona State, among many others, hot on his trail. Now Brown has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

This is Troy Brown Jr. coming to you from USA Today HSS with my first player blog. I’m very excited to be starting this with USA Today! I hope you guys like it and I hope you continue to follow me on my journey.

I just got back from the Elite 24 and it was a great experience for me; especially with me being a young guy seeing all the guys like Chase (Jeter), Zimm (Stephen Zimmerman) and Ivan (Rabb) from the west coast in their second year with the game. Then it was my first time being in New York City; I just loved the atmosphere.

One of the cool things that we did that people didn’t get to see on TV was touring the 9/11 site. They taught us a lot on the tour that I didn’t know. Now they’re making the buildings with bomb resistant materials; I thought that was pretty cool.

Of course we got in some NBA 2K in our downtime in the Player’s Lounge. I’d have to say that it was between Malik Newman and Isaiah Briscoe for the “2K King” title!

The game was cool, but I think the practices were probably more competitive. Everybody was getting along really well and going at each other.

In the game they changed my rotation; I thought I was coming in with the second group but then they changed it and I came in with the third group and only played like five minutes in the half.

It was still a fun experience though!

Just the whole experience with the crowd and the fans and being outside was cool. Now I’ll have more experience for next year and the year after that.

Me and Jalek (Felton) were the only two guys from 2017 at the Elite 24 and we took it as a fun experience; we weren’t stressing about playing time or anything like that. We were just happy to have the experience.

It’s early for me with the recruitment stuff but Chase is always messing with me about Duke. We were walking on the elevator and he was trying to put his Duke hat on me and stuff like that. He’s trying to get me there with him.

So far I’ve got offers from Arizona, Arizona State, USC, UNLV, UCLA. Duke was the last school to offer me; I was down in North Carolina for the CP3 Camp and we finished the camp early and had a long time before my flight so my coach took me over to Duke. He told me not to expect an offer because it’s just a quick visit, and I was fine with that. I was just excited to see the campus and see Coach K and Coach Capel.

Coach Capel took me around the campus and it was great; I saw all of the history and the banners and the locker room. It was cool; we took pics and everything.

We saw Coach K for a second, but he was showing Tyus Jones’ little brother around at the time because he was at the younger camp.

After he was done we ended up sitting down with Coach K in his office and talking for an hour and a half. We talked about everything! He even told me about the time he met Jay Z and Beyonce! He said he took a picture with Beyonce so I thought that was real cool.

Then I got the offer. It was really exciting and, to be honest, it didn’t even really sink in that I got that offer until we went to get something to eat after we left. It was crazy!

Right now, for me, I just look at recruiting as fun.

I’m really young and I can’t keep in touch with the coaches yet so I just get excited about the offers and think about what it would be like playing at the different schools.

It’s been a long summer, but I’m not really big on taking a lot of time off from basketball. I just like to stay in shape and, honestly, I just love the game too much to stay away. I’ll probably just take about two weeks off to rest my body and focus on starting school, which starts today.

I’ll probably just hang out with my friends and go to some of our football games; they’re always real exciting because a lot of people from different schools come to our games to chill and hang out.

This year we have states for basketball in Vegas so I definitely want to lead my team to the championship; that’s the goal.

I’m taking honors courses this year too so I definitely plan to stay on top of my books; that’s important to me.

Well, that’s the end of my first blog people. I hope you liked it and I hope you continue to follow my blog and learn about everything that’s going on with me.

I’m gonna get out of here; first day of classes!

Talk to you guys later!
