THE WINNER: Lucy Biles


School: Herriman (Utah)
Grade: Junior
Position: Distance runner
Height: 5-foot-6

Athletic achievement: She raced to the Class 5A individual state championship this past season with a time of 17:41.9. The state’s returning Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, Biles took third at the Foot Locker West Regional championships in 18:55.5 and finished seventh nationally at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, with a time of 17:43, earning All-American status. Biles also won the Park City Invitational, the Nebo Invitational and the Bob Firman Invitational, and finished second at the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional championships, in 17:36.7.

Academic excellence: Biles has maintained a 3.82 GPA.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church youth group, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, a homeless shelter and a food bank.


“Lucy’s greatest strength is her consistency,” said Herriman head coach James Barnes. “There aren’t a lot of girls who have won back-to-back state titles, but she ran with a lot of confidence this year, and she’s the hardest-working runner I’ve ever had.”

THE FUTURE: Biles will be a senior this fall.
