FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Westlake High School student died and another was seriously injured in a car accident over the weekend.
According to Fulton County spokesperson Kay Lester, the accident happened around 10 p.m. Saturday at Cascading Lane and Cascade Palmetto Highway.
Lester says a car went off the road and hit a tree. Both driver and passenger were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where the driver, Myka Roberts, later died. The passenger, Koryn McLeod, remained hospitalized on Monday.
Investigators have not released the cause of the accident.
On Sunday, Westlake High School interim principal Alexandra Bates sent out the following:
It is with a heavy heart that I send this e-mail. Last night two Westlake students were in a severe car accident. Myka Roberts, a junior, passed away as a result of the accident and Koryn McLeod also a junior is receiving treatment at a local hospital. Both students were active members of the softball team. Guidance counselors, as well as other staff will be available to support students and staff as needed.
This is a tragic loss for both families and the Westlake community. We ask that you keep both families in your thoughts and prayers as they go through the grieving and healing process.
Roberts was remembered as a star catcher on Westlake’s softball team and a student leader, according to interim principal Alexandra Bates.
A prayer vigil is planned at the school on Monday night. That vigil is closed to the public.
Grief counselors will be at Westlake High on Tuesday as students return to class.
