Eleven Dutchess County high school wrestlers advanced to today’s Section 1 Division I semifinals at Clarkstown South High School.
The semifinals are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., with the finals to follow at 12:30 p.m.
John Jay had four wrestlers — Randy Earl (106 pounds), Jay Albis (113), Grant Frederick (138) and Brett Perry (182) — reach today’s action by getting through the first two rounds at Arlington on Saturday.
Albis picked up his 100th career victory in the quarterfinals.
“We were expecting to see Jay, Grant and Brett in the semifinals,” John Jay coach Jamie Weaver said.
“Randy was relentless and did not stop. His heart is so huge and he wanted to get through (to today).”
Arlington and Roy C. Ketcham each have three wrestlers competing at Clarkstown South. The Admirals had Alfredo Olmedo (99), Brady Robin (113) and Mike Peterson (160) advance.
“I think they all have a good chance (to win),” Arlington coach Fred Perry said. “They’ve gotten better throughout the season, and they are peaking at the right time.”
Danny Murphy (145), Dom Emery (195) and Murphy Wilson (220) are representing Ketcham in the semifinals.
Beacon’s Andrew Grella needed a combined 57 seconds to pin his two opponents to advance to the semifinals.
A year ago, 15 mid-Hudson Valley wrestlers reached the state tournament, including a pair of Section 1 Division I champions, Dale White (160) and Perry (170), and 10 Section 9 Division II champions.
White and Perry were John Jay’s first sectional wrestling champions since 2007.
This year’s Section 9 Division II tournament will be held today at Bard College in Annandale, with finals scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m.
