Game in Nevada suspended after brawl breaks out in stands, police involved

Days after two Indiana basketball teams had their seasons suspended because of a fight on the court, a fight broke out in the stands at a game in Henderson, Nev., with the score tied in overtime. Campus and Henderson police reported to the scene and eventually decided to evacuate the gym because of an unsafe situation.

The game between Basic and Foothill at Foothill’s senior night was suspended with the score tied at 61-61 with 3:30 remaining in overtime. The schools are arch-rivals, separated by less than a mile.

The initial fight involved a player from Basic’s team and fans in the stands. The Basic player was ejected from the game.

According to Capt. Ken Young from the Clark County School District police, officers escorted those involved out of the gym. But the fight resumed outside. Despite reports to police about a guns and shots being fired, Young said no guns were involved in the incident and no shots were fired.

Police are investigating the cause of the fight, but no one was injured and no arrests were made. Several citations were issued.

A meeting is scheduled for Thursday to determine how to handle the result of the game because of its implications on playoff seeding.
