NEW YORK — Maybe playing in the McDonald’s All America Game isn’t that tiring, even if you have to fly directly from Chicago to New York on little sleep for the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Nationals.
Of the five players on the DICK’S Nationals All-Tournament team, four of them played in the McDonald’s game: Ben Simmons, Jaylen Brown, Thomas Bryant and Allonzo Trier. The lone all-tournament selection without any association to Ronald McDonald was Joe Hampton.
BEN SIMMONS — Simmons, the 6-9 forward from Montverde (Fla.), who is headed to LSU, was the tournament MVP. He scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds in the Eagles’ 70-61 championship defeat of Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) on Saturday. He averaged 19.3 points and 11.7 rebounds in his three games in the tournament.
THOMAS BRYANT — The powerful Huntington (W.Va.) Prep forward who announced on Saturday he would attend Indiana averaged 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games.
JAYLEN BROWN — Brown, who has not announced his college choice, had 29 points and had 15 rebounds in Wheeler’s 73-70 loss to Huntington Prep, his only game in the tournament.
ALLONZO TRIER — The Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) guard who is headed to Arizona averaged 22.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games.
JOE HAMPTON — Hampton, a junior power forward, had only six points in the championship but he had 12 points in Oak Hill’s semifinal defeat of Huntington Prep and 13 points in his team’s quarterfinal defeat of Wings Academy (Bronx, N.Y.).
