Duke haters shield your eyes — One half of the reason your Duke disdain will undoubtedly intensify next season signed his National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning, the first day of the NCAA’s Early Signing Period, which runs through Nov. 18.
Chaminade College Prep (St. Louis) forward Jayson Tatum, who is ranked No. 2 overall in the ESPN 100, is officially a Blue Devil.
“Feels great,” Tatum said. “Glad to make this official! This is one of the days I’ve always been looking forward to; it’s just an amazing feeling! I’m just thankful.”
Tatum will officially team up with “one of my best friends” at Duke when Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) forward Harry Giles III, who is ranked No. 1 overall, signs later this afternoon.
Giles tore the ACL in his right knee during the first few minutes of the Warriors’ season opener. He is expected to miss his senior season as a result.
This past summer, Tatum averaged 24.1 points, 7.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game at the uber-prestigious Nike Peach Jam and led the St. Louis Eagles to the title game.
Tatum committed to Duke during Peach Jam.
“I’m just so happy to be a part of this program, with great coaches like this.” Tatum said then. “It’s great to have this over with. My mom is proud of me.”
Last season he led Chaminade to a third-place finish in the state playoffs averaging 26 points per game. Chaminade is ranked No. 14 in the Super 25 preseason rankings.
