Two local high school coaches have been recognized as the best in the state in their respective sports.

Pennfield’s Mike Roach was selected as the Boys’ Bowling Coach of the Year and Marshall’s Sue Hutchings was named Girls’ Bowling Coach of the Year at the 56th annual Coach of the Year banquet for the Michigan High School Coaches Association on Nov. 8 in Lansing.

The MHSCA recognized 21 coaches and an athletic director. Coaches receiving recognition were chosen by 21 individual sports associations that are members of the MHSCA. Each sports association chooses its own criteria in the selection process.

Roach was inducted into the Michigan High School Interscholastic Bowling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014. He guided Pennfield’s girls to the 2013 Division 3 state championship. Last season, Pennfield’s Kadee Bechman captured the Division 3 girls’ singles state title while the boys’ team finished eighth in the state.
