The Harry Giles III Blog: Playing at Oak Hill, Wake Forest visit, Coach K's White House stories and more

Harry Giles III missed the entire 2013-14 season recovering from ACL, MCL and meniscus tears; since then he’s dominated the AAU scene, helped lead the USA U17 and U19 teams win gold and turned in an even more dominant junior season at Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.). Giles, who is ranked No. 1 overall in the ESPN 100, is now at Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) and has a top five of  North Carolina, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Kansas and Duke. Giles has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

What’s up everybody it’s your boy HG and I’ve got a lot of stuff coming at y’all today; settling into a new school and everything so let’s get it!

First of all the open gym runs here at Oak Hill are crazy!

I mean it’s really like a game every day! I can’t take it easy out there if I want to win the game; and, of course, y’all know that I want to win. I really have to push myself because we’re so talented!

The Hill is REAL!

Day one we ran the mile and it was rough! My best time is 6:33. We have to run from the gym to the entrance all the way back up the hill! I know what they mean by Oak “Hill” now, trust me!

The conditioning here is just crazy, but I know it’s gonna have us in the best shape to do what we have to do this season.

I definitely think we’re the No. 1 team in the country, but we’ll let USA Today vote on that! Haha!

I just feel like we’re so deep and talented at every position. We really have two starting lineups that could probably be the No. 1 team!

The biggest reason I believe that we’re No. 1 is we work HARD! That’s what I love about it. We’re all getting better and better. No one cares about what they’re ranked or not ranked they’re coming at you every day in practice.

The coaches recruiting me have been coming out strong to see me and they all say that they can’t wait to get me on campus to show me the atmosphere, break down film, experience everything that they have to offer and everything like that so I’m excited about that.

I had a great visit to Wake Forest last weekend!

I’m going to Kansas for Late Night in the Phog. After that I’m going to Kentucky for Big Blue Madness, North Carolina and I’ll end up at Duke for Halloween weekend!

I can’t wait! I know all of the visits are gonna be crazy!

Duke just got back from the White House meeting with President Obama after winning the national title so it was cool to hear Coach K’s stories from that day. He said they shut everything down for them to come in. I definitely wondered what it was like to meet President Obama so that was an interesting talk.

Coach (Roy) Williams and Coach (Bill) Self came by last week and I had great meetings with both of them. Coach Self is just a cool guy and Coach Williams is cool too. I have great relationships with both of them. Of course Coach (Danny) Manning is my guy too and Coach (John) Calipari was in last week and we had a great talk. It was definitely the best talk that I’ve ever had with Coach Cal. It was just me and him and no one else.

I know I’ve told you guys this before but this is gonna be a tough.

I know y’all saw my boy Dennis Smith committed to N.C. State! I’m happy for my boy because he is living his dream! I know that was the right choice for him and I know he’s gonna dominate for them.

He’s hurt now, but, trust me, he’s gonna be back to dominating at an even higher level when he comes back. I went through the same thing and worse and I talked to him for about an hour one night about how important it is to stay positive and work hard. I already know he’s gonna be fine.

OK, stepping away from basketball for a sec, I’ve gotta tell y’all I’m loving school.

I think my favorite subject is English right now. My teacher Mr. Pease is helping me a lot and I’m learning a lot. I feel like my writing skills are getting to another level so I may be taking Jason Jordan’s job at USA Today soon! You just never know! Haha!

The best part is that I’ve got four A’s and two B’s right now so that’s what I’m most excited about.

Up here on the Hill we don’t have the best reception or the fastest downloads so I haven’t been downloading a lot of music, but I’ve been sticking with that Future anyway!

That’s my favorite right now.

Of course I still mess with Drake and I’m on DeJ Loaf too.

Those are my three!

OK, y’all I’ve gotta run out so I can keep these grades high and try and get them even higher! I appreciate y’all reading; I had to give y’all a good one this time and, trust me, the next one will be even more interesting.

I’ll see you soon!
