Lauren Cox is the No. 1 overall player in the ESPN HoopGurlz 100 and recently committed to Baylor. This summer, Cox, a forward at Flower Mound (Flower Mound, Texas), earned her third gold medal, this time with the USA U19 National Team. Now she’s agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into her world by chronicling everything from intimate details about her recruitment to her everyday life in a blog.
Hey guys this is Lauren and I’m about to do my second blog so I hope y’all like it!
Last weekend I went on my official visit to Baylor. This was my fifth visit and I actually wasn’t gonna commit until later in the week, but I was there and it just felt right! I wanted to do it in person so I just committed on Sunday.
Saturday night we all went over to Coach (Kim) Mulkey’s house and we had dinner and there was like a sing off and a big dance party broke out! It was just really fun and I felt right at home with the players and coaches; all I could think was, “Man this is really where I want to be!”
That night my parents and I got back to the hotel and we were going up to the elevator to our rooms; we were all tired and I just kinda leaned on them and hugged them and told them I wanted to commit tomorrow.
They were really excited!
Then on Sunday I was doing a photo shoot with the Baylor jersey on and I was wearing the No. 15, which I told you guys in my last blog was the number I wanted to wear.
I was taking a picture with Coach Mulkey and I asked her how I looked and she said, “Good!” So I said, “Good ‘cause this is what I’m gonna be wearing for the next four years.”
She just kinda looked up at me and was speechless then she said, “What did you just say? Did you just commit?”
She looked like she was about to cry and gave me a big hug. Then all of the other coaches started freaking out and we had a big group hug!
It feels great to have this decision out of the way! The recruiting process is fun, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times.
I can honestly say that I had no idea that I was gonna commit on the visit. I fully planned to come home from the visit and talk about the pros and cons of each school with my family and make a decision that way.
The night I announced my commitment my phone was blowing up! I had so many people on Twitter congratulating me and saying welcome to the family! Everyone was really happy for me.
All of the schools on my list were great options, but I think the biggest factor that put Baylor over the top was the close proximity to my family. I live about an hour and 45 minutes away from campus and that means my family and friends can come to my home games.
That’s huge for me because I’m really close with my family. I’ll still get to see my sisters grow up and go through high school and things like that.
It’s perfect for me!
I was a little nervous when I had to call the other coaches to let them know about my decision, but it was actually not that bad. They all wished me well. They were cool.
It’s perfect timing because I’m about to start my senior basketball season. I just finished up volleyball and I’ll go right to basketball starting Friday.
OK guys thanks again for reading my blog, I’ll be back soon with another one.
