ACA-Christ School soccer to play at UNCA

Asheville Christian Academy’s boys soccer team won last year’s NCISAA 2-A championship.

Friday night isn’t just for high school football.

Boys soccer teams from Asheville Christian Academy and Christ School have agreed to play a neutral site game for the foreseeable future at UNC Asheville, starting with Friday’s 7 p.m. matchup at Greenwood Field.

Admission is free for spectators.

Neither one of the Carolinas Athletic Association teams has a lighted home field. ACA (9-2-2, 4-0-0) will be the home team on the scoreboard Friday and the Greenies (8-4-0, 4-0-0) are the visitors. The way the arrangement works is that both sides will give up one home game a season to play on the college field and this year is ACA’s turn.

The Lions are the defending NCISAA 2-A champions.

“It was probably (Greenies coach Guy Campbell) who came up with the idea. We’re good friends and we were having lunch one day and talking about how we could make this rivalry more of a community affair,” ACA coach Terry Hughes said.

“We thought it would be nice to play at Greenwood Field and when it became available, I know I jumped on it right away.”
