FIRST TEAM OFFENSE
E: Donovan Peoples-Jones
Cass Tech, senior, 6-feet-2, 190 pounds (captain)
Highlights: As the No. 1 recruiting prospect in the state, he couldn’t be contained, finishing with 52 receptions for 1,007 yards and 17 TDs. He also added 114 rushing yards, four interceptions, one fumble recovery and two TDs defensively and three punt returns for TDs.
OL: Jordan Reid
Cass Tech, senior, 6-4, 280
Highlights: One of the best offensive linemen in the state, he finished with 12 pancake blocks, one fumble recovery and allowed no sacks. Defensively, he helped with 21 tackles (11 for loss) and two sacks.
OL: Dave Blake
Denby, junior, 6-0, 255
Highlights: Instrumental in helping teammate Adonte Calhoun rush for over 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons and has been Denby’s most proficient run blocker. Defensively, he helped with 25 tackles (15 for loss) and five sacks.
OL: Kailen Abrams
Loyola, senior, 6-1, 220
Highlights: Played several positions on an offensive line that had two 1,000-yard rushers (D’Anthony Robinson, Malcolm Mays) and a quarterback rush for over 800 yards (Price Watkins). Defensively, he finished with 122 tackles (36 assists), two interceptions, three fumble recoveries, four blocked passes and nine tackles for loss.
OL: Aaron Wood
Mumford, senior, 5-11, 300
Highlights: A two-way monster on both lines, Mumford’s ball carriers ran behind his lead blocking 85 percent of the time. He also had eight pancake blocks. Defensively, he helped with 50 tackles (12 for loss), 10 sacks and one TD.
OL: Eric Mitchell
Western, senior, 6-2, 265
Highlights: A three-year starter who finished his season with a 95-percent blocking efficiency rating. Prides himself on his toughness and how coachable he is. Defensively, he helped with 87 tackles and six sacks on the defensive line.
E: Samuel Womack
East English Village, senior, 6-0, 173
Highlights: A monster both rushing and receiving, he finished with 51 catches for 814 receiving yards and 11 TDs as well as 16 carries for 187 yards rushing and three scores. Defensively, he helped with 39 tackles, six interceptions, nine pass breakups, one forced fumble and three defensive TDs.
QB: Rodney Hall
Detroit Cass Tech, senior, 6-3, 215
Highlights: A three-year starter who lost only four games, he finished with 2,368 yards and 23 TDs passing and 989 yards and 15 TDs rushing. His five TDs passing in the Division 1 state championship tied a finals record during Cass Tech’s win over Detroit Catholic Central.
RB: Elijah Collins
U-D Jesuit, junior, 6-1, 195
Highlights: Despite missing one game because of an injury, he totaled 721 yards rushing, 306 yards receiving and averaged 35 yards per kickoff return. He finished with 19 total TDs (14 rushing, 3 kickoff returns, one interception return and one receiving). He’s being looked at by FBS schools at the next level, including Central Michigan and Iowa State.
RB: Adonte Calhoun
Denby, senior, 5-10, 210
Highlights: Behind a stud offensive line, he has rushed for 1,000 yards in each of the past three seasons and has amassed 3,800 career rushing yards. He rushed 141 times for 1,229 yards and a team-high 14 TDs as a senior.
RB: Zhamine March
East English Village, junior, 5-9, 169
Highlights: Finished his junior season with seven Division 1 offers thanks to his 1,187 yards and 16 TDs rushing. He added eight receptions for 211 yards and three TDs in the passing game. Defensively, he helped out with 48 tackles, 11 pass breakups and four interceptions.
K: Luis Borjas
Cass Tech, senior, 5-10, 153
Highlights: About as sure of a thing as they come, he finished a perfect 85 for 85 kicking extra points, including making all seven of his attempts in the Division 1 state championship. He made fields goals of 34 and 23 yards in the state semifinal to help the Technicians advance to Ford Field.
FIRST TEAM DEFENSE
DL: Damani Green
King, senior, 6-feet-1, 295 pounds
Highlights: As one of the top defenders in the city, he totaled 59 tackles and eight sacks and helped lead the Technicians to their second Division 1 state championship in two seasons. He had three tackles (two solo) in the state final.
DL: Antonio McCants
Western, senior, 6-4, 220
Highlights: A varsity player since his freshman season and a three-year starter who prides himself on playing with high emotions. He finished his senior year with 103 tackles (43) for loss and 16 sacks.
DL: Orniska Webster
East English Village, junior, 5-11, 225
Highlights: Almost unblockable, he ended the season with 31 tackles (16 for loss), eight sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Offensively, he started every game and played all five positions on the line.
DL: Eric Smith
Cass Tech, junior, 6-1, 280
Highlights: A starting nose guard, he was fourth on the team with five tackles (four solo) in Cass Tech’s Division 1 state championship win over Detroit Catholic Central. He finished with 98 tackles, seven forced fumbles and six sacks and helped a Technicians squad shut out five different opponents.
LB: Brian McNamara
U-D Jesuit, senior, 6-1, 235
Highlights: A three-year starter, he finished his final season with 104 tackles (16 for loss) and four sacks during the Cubs’ eight-game regular season schedule. Patterns his gave after former Cub Connor Barwin, who plays in the NFL.
LB: Cepeda Phillips
King, senior, 6-0, 220
Highlights: A downhill tackler committed to Kent State as a two-star outside linebacker, he finished with 98 tackles (13.5 for loss) and 5.5 sacks.
LB: Chaim Austin
Central, sophomore, 5-7, 242
Highlights: From sideline to sideline, he is the captain of Central’s defense and being looked at by several Mid-American Conference teams at the next level. He finished with 113 tackles (69 solo) 13 sacks, seven interceptions, 10 forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
DB: Jaylen Kelly-Powell
Cass Tech, senior, 6-0, 180
Highlights: Arguably the top defensive back in the state, he helped the Technicians with 52 tackles, 22 pass breakups and three interceptions. He added 58 carries for 647 yards and eight TDs rushing as well as 119 yards and three TDs receiving.
DB: Jae’Veyon Morton
King, junior, 5-9, 170
Highlights: A school with a rich history of shutdown defensive backs, he filled right into that role and helped the Crusaders with four interceptions (two returned for TDs), six pass breakups, two sacks and 67 tackles. He also returned one kickoff for a touchdown and had 39 carries for 479 yards and 13 TDs rushing.
DB: Donovan Johnson
Cass Tech, senior, 5-11, 178
Highlights: Part of one of the top secondaries in the state, he had a breakout season by finishing with 32 tackles, 10 pass breakups and three interceptions. He helped the Technicians with 76 rushes for 987 yards and 15 TDs on offensive and 497 yards and three TDs on kick returns.
DB: Ambry Thomas
King, senior, 6-0, 174 (captain)
Highlights: Shared the Mr. Can-Do-Everything title with Walled Lake Western’s Cody White this season, as he had three interceptions (one returned for a TD), 42 tackles and 14 pass breakups as a shutdown cornerback on defense and 43 receptions for 895 yards and 13 TDs on offense.
Coach: Tony Blankenship
Highlights: Led a team that gave up only one touchdown during the Division 2 City Playoffs, including shutting out Mumford in the championship game. His defense pitched three shutouts and held won seven games by holding their opponents to eight points or fewer.
