Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) girls volleyball wins Durango Fall Classic

Archbishop Mitty of San Jose, Calif., won the prestigious Durango Fall Classic girls volleyball event held over the weekend in Las Vegas.

Mitty downed Xavier Prep (Phoenix) 25-23, 25-19 in the championship final.

The tournament featured 63 teams, including eight in the USA TODAY Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Associatin Super 25 rankings.

Five of the nation’s top 10 teams were in attendance, including No. 2 Fayetteville (Ark.), No. 5 Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville), No. 7 Assumption (Louisville), No. 8 Pleasant Grove (Utah), and No. 10 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) along with No. 11 Santa Margarita (Calif.), No. 15 Walton (Marietta, Ga.) and No. 17 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).

Santa Margarita beat Sacred Heart 26-24, 25-15 in the third-place match. Walton won the fifth-place match against Torrey Pines (Calif.), 25-17, 25-16.
