Archbishop Mitty (Calif.), Xavier (Ariz.) enter Super 25 girls volleyball after Durango Classic performance

After reaching the championship match of the prestigious Durango Fall Classic, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) and Xavier College Prep (Phoenix) made huge strides in this week’s USA TODAY Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Super 25.

Neither Mitty nor Xavier was ranked last week. Now, Mitty is No. 3 and Xavier is No. 6.

Mitty downed Xavier Prep 25-23, 25-19 in the championship final.

The tournament in Las Vegas featured 63 teams, including eight that were ranked in the Super 25 last week.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) remains undefeated at 11-0 and holds on to the No. 1 spot that it has had since the preseason.

Waco Midway (Texas) moved from No. 9 to No. 2 after road victories at Waxahachie, Granbury and Hendrickson. Midway is 29-2 with the only two losses coming early in the season to Plano West and Clear Creek.

After Mitty, Oak Ridge (Conroe, Texas) has moved down a spot to No. 4 and Eagan (Minn.) is down to No. 5.

Other newcomers this week: Torrey Pines (San Diego) at No. 10 and Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) at No. 13. Torrey Pines was sixth at Durango; Mira Costa was seventh.
