After getting through the first leg of the season unscathed, the Lincoln girls tennis team knew claiming the program’s first undefeated season since 2001 was a realistic goal.
“Coming in, we weren’t thinking undefeated right from the start… Until you play the top teams you don’t really know,” coach Tom Krueger said. “Once we got through everybody once, we kind of had a feeling that we were onto something special.”
“We didn’t know for sure, but we were kind of hoping,” added senior Brooke Lovrien, who finished second in Flight 6 singles and first in Flight 3 doubles.
Last weekend, the Patriots accomplished that feat, claiming the state title by 64 points over Rapid City Stevens. They had four girls finish first, four finish second and one finish third.
Two of LHS’ state champs – Emily Whitney and Johana Brower – finished the year undefeated.
“It was a little crazy at the beginning, but it was really big to get a team win for all of us since it’s been so long since the school’s won,” said senior Sidney Brower, who finished third in first flight singles and second in first flight doubles. “It was really, really exciting.”
The future is bright for the Lincoln tennis program, which returns the majority of its roster, including Flight 2 singles player Meredith Benson and a trio of middle-schoolers in Johanna Brower, Ava Leonard and Elle Dobbs.
“Our seven and eight, they move up,” senior Sidney Brower explained. “So, we’re still going to have a really good top six.”
