Weather concerns have moved up the Avery County-Madison football game to Thursday.

The two Western Highlands Conference teams have agreed to a 7 p.m. kickoff in Newland.

Madison (4-4, 1-2) is coming off a 40-32 win over Owen, while Avery County lost on Friday to Polk County, 46-7.

Patriots senior Colby Edwards is enjoying far-and-away the best season of his varsity career with 1,496 passing yards, 795 rushing yards and 25 combined touchdowns.

Derek Gonzalez (730 yards, seven touchdowns) is a valued back in Madison’s scheme, while Dawson Coates (47 receptions for 596 yards and seven touchdowns) and Elan Littrell (42 receptions for 563 yards and two  touchdowns) have been a terror for opposing secondaries.

There are lots of turnaround stories in Western North Carolina football this autumn, and the Patriots are one of the best ones. They’ve already won twice as many games as they did in either the 2015 or 2014 seasons.

Logan Roberts (10.5 tackles per game) pulls up the lead for the defense along with Keegan Foley (9.3), Devin Nash (7.8), Austin Shelton (7.1) and Dakota Surrett (7.1).
