MULBERRY – Mulberry just couldn’t overcome the 30-0 lead Fort Myers Bishop Verot built and then a running clock cost them a 36-13 Class 4A, District 6, loss.
In the final game at the Phosphate Bowl the Panthers (2-5, 2-2) got an electrifying 68-yard run from Lewis Marshall as time ran out in the third period.
A 44-yard interception return by Sean Davis set up a two yard run by Michael Davis as time ran out in the fourth. The win pushed Bishop Verot ahead (4-4, 3-1) of the Panthers and into second place in the district.
Mulberry couldn’t get past the 50-yard line in the first quarter and despite some good defensive play by Davis, just wasn’t able to move the ball. His 20-yard return appeared to give the Panthers some momentum, but Will McDonald’s first pass attempt was picked off.
After the Vikings opened the second quarter with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Korey Besse to Devon Thompkins to build a 10-0 lead, Mulberry fumbled the ensuing kickoff.
It took just three seconds for Jos Mira to run nine yards and Bishop Verot took a 17-0 lead.
The passing of Viking quarterback Korey Besse, their bread-and-butter offense, was the big difference with the junior threw for touchdowns of 38, 30 and 21 yards.
Mullberry had just 75 yards rushing in the first quarter and only Brian Washington’s 28 yard run was of any significance.
