Blanchet knocks off No. 1 Scio for first time since 2006

Blanchet Catholic School’s football team came back from a 6-0 halftime deficit to defeat Scio 21-6 for the first time since 2006.

Blanchet knocks Scio from its perch as undefeated and No. 1 ranked in Class 3A and the Cavaliers improve to 3-1 in the PacWest and 5-3 overall.

Scio, which could have clinched its third consecutive PacWest championship, falls to 4-1 and 6-1 overall.

Scio’s Nathan Yoder ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give the Loggers a 6-0 lead, and Scio held Blanchet to 44 yards of offense in the first half.

On Blanchet’s first offensive play of the second half, sophomore quarterback R.J. Veliz took a designed run 84 yards for a touchdown. Six minutes later he turned a broken play into a 31-yard touchdown and ran for the two-point conversion to put Blanchet up 14-6.
