It’s not often Bossier High gets a victory over West Monroe in any sport, which made Thursday’s 41-32 win by the Lady Kats over the Lady Rebels especially meaningful for coach DeShawn Williams.
“We hope we are putting together something special,” Williams said. “We have a lot of players – we’re probably eight or so deep with some speed and some size.”
The second game of the day in the 2016 Bossier Lady Kat Invitational appeared it might be a runaway for the visitors early as West Monroe built an 8-0 lead in the opening four minutes of play.
But West Monroe didn’t score in the last half of the frame as the Lady Kats pulled back within 1, then took the lead on a 3-pointer by Kelcee Marshall to open the second quarter. Bossier never relinquished the lead.
The Lady Rebels were playing mostly without McNeese signee Jahquell Robinson, who is trying to heal from a minor injury. The senior played just a few minutes of the opening frame.
“We are really young at guard without her in there, so it was struggle,” West Monroe coach John Green said. “We’ll have some growing pains for a while.”
The Lady Kats slowly built their lead to double digits, leading 24-13 after a layup by Chloe Walker, who finished with 6 points. Bossier took a 9-point lead into intermission then scored the first three buckets of the second half by Draunitika Thomas, Queinna White and Walker to push the advantage to 31-25.
Bossier’s largest lead of the game came on Navia Johnson’s 8-footer to open the final frame at 39-20.
