Capt. Shreve tops Caddo Magnet in volleyball

Caddo Magnet took an early lead in all three games against Captain Shreve in a Division I, District I volleyball match on Tuesday night at the Lady Mustangs’ gym, but the Lady Gators roared back three times to sweep the contest.

Shreve won 25-9, 25-17 and 25-19 to remain undefeated at 3-0 in district play.

“We always start slow, then eventually pick it up,” Shreve coach Marita Hunt said. “We have to learn to start stronger, which we’ll definitely have to do against Airline and Byrd. We need to make a habit of it every game.”

The Lady Gators won it on their service game behind Madison Carruth, Cassie Snow and Alexis McClain. Carruth closed out the first set with 8 consecutive points off her serve.

Magnet led 11-7 in the second set behind some solid play from London Todd, Maggie Boston and the dependable Cierra Lattin. But Carruth’s serves again gave Shreve the lead for good at 12-11 and Sydney Fant extended it even further.

“Our game plan coming in was to play as hard as we can and to play together,” Carruth said. “Every time I get back to serve, I just tell myself that this serve’s on you. I run through my head various things I’ve heard about serving from the clinics I’ve been to.”

It helped that the Lady Gators have one of the best Liberos in north Louisiana in senior Courtney Curtis. She didn’t miss a set or a return throughout the evening.

“Coming off the Ruston win, we were a little rusty, but if we play like we did in that game, we should be undefeated in district,” Hunt said. “I’m satisfied with this win tonight, although I saw some things we need to work on.”

The Lady Mustangs led the third set 12-9 behind some well-placed serves from Caroline Boswell, but a service ace by Carruth nailed Shreve to a 16-13 advantage it wouldn’t relinquish.
