In a rematch of the 2016 Jack Clayton Invitational in Haughton a few weeks ago, Captain Shreve coasted by Haughton for a second time this season, winning 79-37 in the District 1-5A contest in the Shreve gym.

Displaying the fast and furious pace they’ve developed under coach Keith Greene, the Lady Gators jumped out big lead and rolled behind a deadly scoring night from guard Dezyre Black. The junior pumped in 24 points to lead all scorers, while Shreve got 15 points from Aaliyah Stevenson and 12 from Kennedi Heard.

“We played more reserves tonight because we’re trying to build a deeper bench. You never know what might happen during the season,” Greene said. “We are trying to get as many players ready as possible.”

The Lady Gators (12-3) built a 36-16 advantage midway through the second quarter. After Stevenson got a part of steals and layups, along with a 3-pointer, the lead ballooned to 48-18 just before the first half ended.

There weren’t a lot of bright spots for the out-manned Lady Bucs, but Champagne Dennis led the way with 12 points, while Mayghan Myers added 10.

Both coaches emptied their benches early in the second half, so the score didn’t change much after the break. When Shreve’s Lon’niqua Johnson converted a 4-point play (fouled on a made 3-pointer), the score was 73-37 Lady Gators.

“We like to pressure a lot so we have a pretty good sized rotation,” Greene said. “Our main rotation is about 9 or 10 players deep.”

Shreve won the first meeting between the clubs 98-33.
