Carson's Carter continuing strong campaign

He was hardly a secret coming into the season, but Abel Carter is exceeding even the lofty expectations most people had of him.

Four games into the season, the Carson junior has rushed for a league-high 832 yards, 11.6 yards per carry, and scored 11 touchdowns, also the most in the Northern 4A. The 11 touchdowns ties his total from last year. He’s also completed two passes, in two attempts, one for a touchdown against Reed earlier this month.

As a sophomore, he rushed for a team-high 1,161 yards.

Reed senior Tre Bussey is the second-leading rusher in the Northern 4A with 660 yards and eight touchdowns.

The 5-foot-9, 195 pound Carter rarely leaves the field. On defense, he plays outside linebacker and is the Senators third-leading tackler with 29. Justin Tschetter leads the team with 44.

Carter, the youngest of eight brothers, said he gets his athleticism from them, and from his father, who played college football in Missouri. His next oldest brother, Asa Carter, was the Northern 4A Player of the Year last season at carson and is now playing on special teams for Southwest Baptist (3-0).

Abel Carter was devoted to working out over the summer, after baseball season ended. He played third base and outfield for Carson last season and batted .342. He also wrestles for Carson.

Carter is quick to credit the offensive line for his proficiency running the ball.

Last week in a 45-17 win over McQueen, the Lancers keyed on Carter, but that freed up quarterback Jace Keema, who ran for 185 yards and two scores. Carter rushed for 177 and two touchdowns.

“The line did a great job opening up holes for us,” Carter said.

Carter said he has no preference where he plays on the field.

Carson coach Blair Roman said Carter is also a solid blocker.

“We knew last year we had a really good back and he’s proven himself this year. He’s one of top guys in our region,” Roman said. “He’s performed incredibly well. As well as he’s run the ball for us, he does a lot that doesn’t show up in the stat sheets.”

Roman said Carter has a strong work ethic, and his offseason workouts prepare him for football.

Carter gained about 20 pounds since last season. Roman said he also got faster.

“He was quick last year, he had a pretty good breakaway, but he’s developing a fifth gear, so that’s nice to see,” Roman said. “As an all-around player, he’s doing a great job.”

Keema, a senior, played football with both Asa and Abel Carter.

He appreciates having Carter as an option.

“Obviously, he’s blessed with great vision, patience and all the running back skills and it helps that our line is coached by a great offensive line coach (Vic Castro),” Keema said. “It’s kind of a trust. You know Abel has something special in him, that he can do a lot things, you have a trust factor with him.”

Abel Carter said his mindset while running is simple.

“Just keep going, because eventually one will probably break, so just keep going as hard as you can,” he said.

Carson (2-2) will look to remain in the win column when it travels to North Valleys (0-3) for a 7 p.m game Friday.
