Coachella Valley girls' hoops grabs tourney title

Late Friday night, the Coachella Valley High School girls’ basketball team that may not have ever been done in school history.

The Arabs knocked off Desert Christian Academy 45-40 to win the title in the Desert Christian Academy Holiday Classic.

When was the last time Coachella Valley won any sort of girls’ basketball tourney title?

“It’s been a long time since CV girls won a tournament, we can’t even remember if we have,” coach David Silva said with a laugh.

In the title game, it was a two-player attack as Vanessa Woods scored 21 points and racked up 10 rebounds. Iliana Corona added 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

The tourney title included wins over Calipatria, Palm Springs and Lucerne Valley.

The Arabs are off until their first league game on Jan. 10 at home against Yucca Valley.

For Desert Christian in the championship game, Kaylee Espinoza had 13 points, Katie Schmidt had 12 and Ashley Klopfenstein added nine points.
