NEW CASTLE – There was a lot going through William Penn junior defender Anna Martin’s mind as she stepped to the penalty spot in with a chance to break a tie with 2:46 left in the Colonials’ Blue Hen Conference field hockey showdown with visiting Mount Pleasant on Tuesday.

“I was just trying to calm my mind down and make sure that I picked a spot to go to, and I didn’t change my mind because I’ve done it before and missed,” Martin said. “I just kept a cool mind and took deep breaths.”

Martin went left with her shot, which found the back of the cage to give William Penn the lead, and they held on for a 3-2 comeback victory over the Green Knights.

“It’s the best feeling in the world, especially after coming back from being down 2-0. It just feels great to get three goals in the last 10 minutes,” Martin said.

The Colonials (3-1 overall, 3-0 Flight A) were in a two-goal deficit after Mount Pleasant took control with tallies late in the first half and early in the second half.

Autumn Falstad gave the Green Knights the lead when she scored with 13 seconds left in the first half to make it 1-0, and Alexandra Davis made it 2-0 when she scored 4:17 into the second half.

William Penn finally got on the board when Erica Jones roofed a shot to make it a one-goal deficit with 7:32 remaining, and just over two minutes later, Jones tied it a 2-2 with her second goal, giving the Colonials the momentum and setting the stage for Martin’s penalty shot.

“There was a change of momentum. I told the girls that. I talk about how communication builds that energy,” William Penn head coach Clara Hollingsworth said. “It fills our spirits too when you have people taking to you even if it’s ‘someone is on your back.’ You’re more confident. You’re more aware, and you can execute better.”

The Green Knights (2-2, 2-1) knew that the Colonials would present a problem for them, which was compounded when one of their key players went down with an injury.

“We knew coming in here that it was going to be a slow field and a different kind of game. We lost our captain and center-mid when she took a ball off her noggin,” Mount Pleasant head coach Peter Meisel said. “That took a little bit out of us in the middle, and to their credit, they kept pressing and pounded in a couple of goals.”
