Cougars, Giants move up in latest power points

With three weeks left in the regular season, the race for VHSL high school football playoff spots is heating up.

Stuarts Draft (7-0), which is coming off a 28-7 victory over Wilson Memorial on Friday, moved ahead of Goochland to take over the top spot in Region 2A East. The Cougars and the No. 2 Bulldogs, who rolled over Nottoway 45-16 on Friday, were tied for the lead last week.

Buffalo Gap (5-2), which held off Luray 13-8 on Friday to end a two-game losing streak, moved up one spot to No. 5 behind No. 3 Central-Woodstock (6-1) and No. 4. Clark County (5-2).

In 3A West, Waynesboro (3-5) has gotten back into the playoff picture, moving up to No. 16 after its big win Friday over Turner Ashby at James Madison’s Bridgeforth Stadium. The Little Giants, who are gunning for their third straight postseason berth, are just under a point ahead of Northside for the final playoff spot, and face Broadway on Friday and Fort Defiance the following week in their final two games.

There’s no change at the top in 1A East, as Riverheads maintained its grip on the No. 1 spot, The Gladiators (7-0), who crushed Page County 63-15 on Friday, have almost a 1.5-point lead on No. 2 Sussex Central (7-0), with Altavista (5-2), Central-Lunenberg (6-1) and Franklin (5-2), rounding out the top five.

The ratings, which determine the teams in each region that will advanced to postseason play, are an average of points from a formula that includes opponents’ classifications, in-district or out-of-district status, and wins and losses by teams already beaten.

The top 16 teams in 2A East and 3A West, and the top 12 in 1A East advance to the postseason, which gets underway the weekend of Nov. 11-12.
