Paced by Sophomore Haven Honeycutt, the Asheville High Boys Cross Country Team finished 3rd in Saturday’s Sixth Annual “Hare and Hounds” Invitational at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.  The Cougars trailed only champion St. Pius X from Atlanta and Charlotte Catholic. Asheville was the highest finishing public school team among the 30 teams competing in the event.  Last year, they finished 2nd in the meet, which is widely considered as one of the top 10 meets in the State.

The Cougars were paced by Honeycutt, who finished in 16:22.62 for 10th place on a dry, fast course.  John Douglas Kelly was 26th (16:54.97) and Collin Kemper was 30th (17:02.95).

This event plays homage to the sport’s beginnings in 1837 at Rugby School in England where students first ran over a pre-set course over open country.  Previously, a group of runners would leave a trail through the woods that other runners would follow, leading to the original name of “Hares and Hounds.”
