Danny Diedrich scored two touchdowns and Richie Eletto threw for a score as the fourth-seeded John Jay football team earned a 19-3 win over No. 13 Port Chester in the Section 1 Class AA playoff qualifier on Friday.
“It wasn’t our prettiest game, but we fought and battled for the win,” Patriots coach Tom O’Hare said. “I’m pleased we came out with a win and healthy.”
A field goal gave Port Chester a 3-0 lead on its opening drive in the first quarter, but John Jay answered on Diedrich’s first touchdown run.
The Patriots (6-1) took a 13-3 lead on Eletto’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Jai’von Reynolds at the end of the second quarter. Dylan Burnett broke a long run to reach the 29 with 10 seconds left in the half, putting John Jay in range to attempt the pass.
Diedrich scored again to create the final margin with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
“Port Chester played tough and they’re a solid team,” O’Hare said. “Our defense was outstanding and our offense had some good plays, although we set ourselves back with a number of penalties. We’re looking forward to having a home next week.”
John Jay, which reached the section final last season, will host a quarterfinal against an opponent to be determined next Friday.
“It doesn’t feel much different now than in years past,” O’Hare said. “We worked hard to get to this position and it’s where we want to be.”
