The Donovan Peoples-Jones show began early and often Friday night. In a rematch with a team it had routed earlier in the season, No. 15 Cass Tech rolled to a 62-0 win over Pershing in the semifinals of the Detroit Public School League Playoffs.
Next Friday night, for the fourth consecutive year, Cass Tech will play for the Division 1 PSL title at Detroit’s Ford Field.
Before halftime, the 5-star recruit Peoples-Jones had two punt returns for touchdowns, a touchdown reception, a touchdown pass and an interception.
Cass Tech (8-0) had defeated Pershing (3-5) on Sept. 9, 57-0. By halftime Friday night, Cass Tech had almost matched the score from earlier in the year, jumping out to a 54-0 lead.
Entering the night, Cass Tech had averaged 47.4 points a game while allowing just 8.7 points a contest. This game was not a break from the norm.
It started with Peoples-Jones catching a 35-yard TD reception from Rodney Hall. Then, Peoples-Jones added a 43-yard punt return for a touchdown. For good measure, he then took another punt to the house, this time from 70 yards out. He then added a 13-yard TD toss to Hall to round out an unforgettable first half.
A 9-yard touchdown run by Charles Highbaugh in the third quarter capped the scoring.
The Technicians await the winner of Saturday’s matchup between King and Detroit East English Village Prep.
