Eau Gallie hosted Holy Trinity in Week 7 game postponed by Hurricane Matthew.

MELBOURNE Rescheduled three times due to Hurricane Matthew, Eau Gallie hung on for a thrilling 23-15 victory against Holy Trinity in a non-district Monday night football contest.

It marks the fourth consecutive season in which Eau Gallie (5-2) has won at least five games, but it didn’t come easy against the never-say-die Tigers (4-2). Trailing, 17-0, with five minutes remaining in the first half, Holy Trinity was led by the exploits of running back Jashaun Corbin, who accounted for 197 yards in total offense.

The junior speedster raced for a 48-yard TD run 22 seconds before halftime and hauled in a 24-yard scoring reception from quarterback Joc Perry in the final period.

The Class 3A Tigers were driving for a potential game-tying score late in the game when Eau Gallie’s defense stiffened and stopped the Tigers for a 4-yard loss on a fourth-and-14 from the 15-yard line.

The Commodores were staked to an early lead thanks to quarterback Jack Gallo, who was 10-of-14 for 144 yards passing, including tpuchdown strikes to Luke Kinney and Jarrad Baker, in the first half.  Gallo finished with 193 yards passing and has 964 yards for the season.

Eau Gallie running back Keith Headd added 23 yards rushing, including the only Commodores score of the second half on an 8-yard run.

Gallo had passed for 241 yards in a 31-28 conference win against Jensen Beach Friday. The Tigers had an even faster turnaround prior to Monday’s makeup game, beating Village Academy, 21-20 on Saturday afternoon.

“It was very tough, but I’m sure it affected both teams,” said Tim Powers, Commodores head coach.  “We had a big, close game last week, a district win that took every ounce of energy we had. Tonight we just started slow and finished slow and played slow in between; it was an ugly win but we’ll take it.”
