Evangel will kick off championship weekend for northwest Louisiana by carrying the torch of Shreveport-Bossier City into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for an LHSAA Division I tilt Scotlandville.

The Eagles have already knocked off the division’s No. 1 seeded team in John Curtis and now meet No. 2. A lot of people didn’t expect coach Byron Dawson’s to beat the Patriots last week and many feel the same this week. But after a pair of disappointing losses to open the season against quality teams, the Eagles have been on a win-binge that should continue one more week.

Evangel hasn’t won a state title since 2010 when Phillip Deas was the head coach, but No. 14 may be in the offing.

Prediction: Evangel 28, Scotlandville 21

Semifinals

CLASS 2A

4-Sterlington (11-2) at 1-Many (13-0)

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Many

Noteable: This one might last all night. Many comes in averaging 52.3 points in three playoff games, while Sterlington averages 52.0 over the same span. Turnovers likely to be the difference maker on a dome-trip.

CLASS 1A

5-Oak Grove (10-3) at 1-Haynesville (13-0)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Where: Haynesville

Noteable: The Tigers got here by shellacking three opponents, scoring more than 60 points in four of last five games. Can Trent Franklin, Jerious Bittle, Treyon Hunter and company keep pace? That is the question.

3-Kentwood (9-4) at 2-Logansport (13-0)

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Logansport

Noteable: The Kangaroos have the unenviable task of trying to slow down the Tigers’ offensive juggernaut, but they have the talent to do it. Debell Crawford and company will need to be hitting on all cylinders to advance to the Dome.

Superdome Classic

Division I Championship

2-Scotlandville (12-0) vs. 5-Evangel (10-2)

When: 8:30 p.m.

Where: Superdome, New Orleans

Noteable: The Eagles make their third consecutive trip to the New Orleans area for a football game, but this time it’s with the hope of bringing back yet another state title. It was supposed to be John Curtis vs. Scotlandville for the crown, but the Eagles disrupted the party. A defense led by big Devin Cotton, hard-hitting Bobby Bell and opportunistic ArDarius Washington could give the Hornets fits.
