For the second time this season, a Western North Carolina football player leads the country in touchdowns and overall scoring.
Erwin senior quarterback Damien Ferguson is No. 1 nationally with his 23 touchdowns and 138 points in statistical lists compiled by MaxPreps.
Ferguson has the fifth-most passing yards (1,796) among all United States quarterbacks tracked by the website. Only schools which keep their stats through MaxPreps, as the large majority in WNC do, are part of the lists.
The Warriors (2-3) rebounded from a three-game losing streak with Friday’s 57-34 win at Franklin. C.J. Thompson (41 receptions for 631 yards and 12 touchdowns) set a WNC record for single-game touchdown catches (six) in that nonconference matchup.
Erwin is back on the road for Friday’s game at Reynolds (3-2). It is the first Mountain Athletic Conference game for both teams and kicks off at 7 p.m. MAC schools voted before the season to move up the start of all their games a half-hour.
Tuscola senior running back Caleb Ferguson was previously ranked No. 1 in touchdowns and scoring by MaxPreps. He has 17 combined touchdowns (14 rushing, three receiving) for the undefeated Mountaineers (4-0).
