Pleasantville needed only a punt return for a touchdown, a blocked field goal, two blocked punts, three critical stops in the final minutes and then a field goal with 2.5 seconds remaining to post a 38-35 win over Westlake.
No big deal.
The undefeated Panthers locked up the top seed in Class B going into the playoffs. A rematch with the Wildcats is possible if not likely.
“I don’t know who’s going to stop them,” Pleasantville coach Tony Becerra said. “I’m not looking past anyone. If we’re fortunate to get into a sectional championship game, I’ll worry about Westlake then.”
Jack Howe kicked a 25-yard field in the final seconds.
Pleasantville’s quarterback threw for 108 yards and one touchdown, ran for another touchdown and was also 5 for 5 on PATS.
Charlie McPhee got the Panthers on top 35-28 when he scored on an 8-yard run with 8:58 to play, but Joseph Ferri got Westlake even when he got loose for a 25-yard touchdown run.
There were some decisions to make on fourth down after Howe absorbed a nasty hit and had to leave momentarily.
“We thought about running a fake punt, but Jack is our punter so that wasn’t really an option,” Becerra said. “We decided to go with a pooch punt from an offensive formation and pinned them around the 10-yard line.”
Pleasantville’s defense came up big, forced a punt and Howe came back to guide the offense, which picked up a few yards before the Panthers set up for the field goal.
