Former Southport basketball standout Paul Scruggs announced his commitment to Xavier on Friday afternoon.

Scruggs, a 6-3 guard, transferred from Southport to Prolific Prep (Calif.) for his senior season. He was an IndyStar Indiana Junior All-Star last season, averaging 19.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists to help Southport to a regional title for the first time since 1990.

Scruggs, ranked as the No. 29 overall prospect nationally in the 2017 class on the 247sports.com composite, took official visits to Xavier and UConn. Indiana and Louisville also had been involved.

“Thank you to all of the coaches and schools who put in so much time and effort throughout my recruiting process,” Scruggs said in a message relayed from his coach with the Indy Hoosiers, Mike Peterson. “I have visited some great universities and have to pick the one that I feel is the best place for me … a place that helps me reach my ultimate goals on and off the court. With my process now coming to a close, I am excited to announce I will be furthering my academic and athletic careers and Xavier University.”
